Princely States and the Paramount Power

This work is a study on the formal transformation of the Indian Princes from alllies of the East India Company to vassals of the British Crown during the period 1858-76. It analyses the process leading to the assertion of paramountcy by the British Crown through the Royal Titles Act in violation of assurances contained in the Queen's Proclamation. It contains case studies in respect of several Princely States, including Mysore and Baroda, illustrating the different stages and aspects of British policy. \nThe narrative is based largely on private papers preserved in the India Office Library, the British Museum and the Leeds Archives, Official records preserved in the National Archives of India and Published documents have been fully used.
