This book offers a comprehensive geographical analysis of rural settlements in the Brahmani Basin, Jharkhand, focusing on their spatial patterns, typologies, distribution, and density. It explores the complex interplay between the physical environment and human habitation, emphasizing geomorphological, cultural, and historical influences on settlement structures. The study categorizes settlements into morphological types, rectangular, square, elongated, linear, and amorphous shaped by terrain, landholding systems, and cultural beliefs. It also identifies intermediate forms like L-shaped and V-shaped villages as adaptive responses to environmental and socio-economic conditions. A key contribution of the book is its typology of rural settlements into compact, semi-compact, helmeted, and dispersed forms, linked to factors such as relief, arable land, and communication networks. It further analyses site selection in relation to water divides, valley heads, slopes, and riverbanks, highlighting the role of both natural and cultural determinants. Employing spatial analysis and density mapping across six terrain types, the research reveals notable contrasts in settlement density highest in moderately rugged areas and lowest in hilly regions. Environmental factors such as forest cover, slope, and agricultural potential are shown to significantly influence these patterns. Grounded in robust methodology and supported by census data, hydrological maps, and academic sources, this book is an essential resource for geographers, planners, and researchers. It combines scientific rigor with practical insights, contributing meaningfully to the field of rural settlement geography and human-environment interaction
