Manipuri Dances (A Panorama of Indian Culture)

20th Century India witnessed tremendous development in the field of Dance, Theatre and Cinema. The same trend is visible in the case of the North East Indian states too. \nThe Manipuri dance has its own tradition and heritage rooted in the local environment. The Manipuri dance which is characterised by exquisite hand and body elevated to the status of an Indian classical dance form during the second quarter of the 20th century. The present book gives a comprehensive account of the different forms of Manipuri dance including those of the dominant ethnic communities of the hills. While discussion the nuances of the different forms of Manipuri dance from the angle of a performer and teacher the angle of a performer and teacher the book also argues for strong intervention both from the state government as well as the performers so that its distinct forms could be safeguarded against the onslaught of globalised entertainment industry.
