Present book is the first detailed study of Rural Settlement of Jharkhand in Geography. The book contains the three major aspects of the area i.e., physical and economic background, the cultural complex and Settlement Geography which are divided in fourteen chapters. All chapters discuss in detail the geographical phenomena and are structured around three basic geographic questions that apply to all economic and cultural activities related to settlement - those of location characteristics and relationships. Most of the text conforms to traditional geographic methods but preparation of maps through the data of block level shows a painstaking hard work of the author. Book is useful directly for the students and researchers of settlement geography in all respect as well as a person who wants to know about Jharkhand in detail can seek help from this book. First part of the book contains only three chapters - Geology and Physical Landscape, factors of physical environment and agriculture. Second part consists of chapter four to seven - History, population, culture and geographical regions. Third part of the book has chapter eight to fourteen - Meaning and scope of rural settlements, distribution, regional aspects, settlement types, morphology and house types are discussed in detail.

About the Authors Dr. Ayodhya Prasad was born on 25th November 1935 in a farmer family in the village of Imadpur in Nalanda district, Bihar. He was the only surviving child of his parents Mr. Ramkishan Prasad and Mrs. Dulari Devi. His mother did not want to send him away to study. As he had to pursue studies on his own, he had a very tough journey. In 1949, he completed his Matriculation in first division from Patna University, the only university in Bihar at that time. He was awarded merit scholarship but that alone was not sufficient to cover all expenses and he made up the difference through prize money from various competitions. He won Bihar Rashtrabhasha Prizes for three consecutive years for the best Scientific and Geographical Essays in All Bihar Essay Competition. He received Gold medals in I.A. (1951) and M.A. (1955) for being the first class first. Given his pioneering research work and publications, he was exempted from the Ph.D prerequisite and was allowed to pursue the D. Litt. degree directly. He earned his D.Litt. in Geography in 1968. He was the first scholar to complete D.Litt. from the Ranchi University. Dr. Prasad joined the Department of Geography, Patna University in November 1955 as a Postgraduate teacher. In 1956, he joined Post graduate department at Ranchi University. He had specialization in Human Geography and Cartography, Indian Geology, Political Geography and Settlement Geography in India. His detailed research works are as follows- • Urban Geography of Gaya, M.A. Thesis, Patna University, 1955. • Trends of urbanization in Bihar as a Research Scholar of Patna University during the year 1955-1956. • Settlement Geography of Chotanagpur for D.Litt. degree of Ranchi University, 1968. • Rural Central Places and Mini Economic Regions of Chotanagpur • The physical landscape of Chotanagpur: a study in regional physiography - Geography Outlook 1965 • Quantitative Method of Regional Delimitation for Planning and Development • He guided 33 Master Thesis and 2 Ph.D. Thesis. He was an avid reader and expressed his talent in many other fields including Hindi poetry. He was affiliated with and served many organizations: • President, Photographic society, Ranchi College (1960-1962) • Vice President Social Service League, Ranchi College (1960-1964) • Vice President Planning Forum, Ranchi College (1962-1964), Member editorial board- The Geographical Outlook, a Ranchi University Research Journal • President Managing Committee, Chotanagpur Teachers' Training School • Part time Lecturer in Pre examination coaching centre for Adivasi and Harijan students for All India Competitive Examination • Represented Ranchi University in Youth Leadership Training Camp, Ministry of Education, Government of India,1962 • Represented Ranchi University in Community Development Program of India, 1963 • Represented Ranchi University in 51st, 52nd, 53rd, 54th, 55th, 56th, 57th and subsequent sessions of Indian Science Congress • Represented Ranchi University in International Geographical Congress, New Delhi, 1968 • Life Member, Indian Council of Geographers • Life Member, Deccan Geographical Society • Life Member, Bihar Council of Cultural and Social Science Research • Editor, Ranchi University News Bulletin • Member Indian Science Congress • 1970 Executive member-Indian Science Congress • 1972-76- elected Chairman of the Indian Council of Geographers • 1966-elected Executive Councilor of Indian Science Congress • Member-World Geographical Congress • 1968-elected communicant for consecutive four years to the Commission on Rural Settlements of International Geographical Union • Member of various local, national and international educational, academic and research societies and organisations. Dr. Prasad left for his heavenly abode on 28/07/2014, leaving behind a loving family, his wife Mrs. Savitri Prasad a true partner in his journey, sons Mr. Shashi Kant, a scientist in BARC, Dr. Prabha Kant, Principal commissioner income tax, N. Delhi, Mr. Nishi Kant, an engineer, daughters Mrs. Neelima, a scientist in BARC and Dr. Anima, an obstetrician and gynaecologist.
