Water is the lifeblood of our planet – shaping landscapes, sustaining ecosystems and supporting civilization. Despite all, the movement, distribution and behavior of water in its natural world remains a complex and deeply interconnected subject. Essentials of Hydrology is born out of a desire to demystify this complexity and offer a clear structured introduction to the science of water in the environment.
This book is designed for students early-career researchers and professionals seeking a foundational understanding of hydrology. It combines theoretical principles with practical applications covering the core components of the hydrological cycle, precipitation, infiltration, evaporation, runoff and groundwater flow with its management. Each chapter blends scientific rigor with a simple language, supported by illustrations, case studies and exercises to reinforce key concepts.
The intention behind this work is not merely to present facts but to foster a deeper appreciation for the dynamic processes that govern water on Earth. Whether applied to environmental management, civil engineering, agriculture or climate studies, hydrology is an essential science that underpins many of the pressing challenges of our time.
Hope this book serves as a stepping stone for readers to explore, understand and contribute to the field of geography, especially hydrology with curiosity and confidence.
