The Sundarbans region, initially a dense mangrove forest, saw early human settlements around the fringes for fishing, hunting and limited agriculture.

The Introduction of a zamindari system led to exploitation of tenant farmers and overutilization of land.

Rising sea levels and more frequent cyclones began to challenge the sustainability of agriculture.

Salinity intrusion, driven by tidal surges and embankment failures, rendered large areas unfit for traditional crops. Increased focus on integrated mangrove protection and sustainable agricultural practices emerged as a response to frequent climate-induced disasters.

Migration due to declining agricultural viability has led to reduced farming intensity in certain areas, leaving some lands fallow or transitioning them back to mangrove cover.
